Value for money is now a vital aspect of asset management. Here, we interview Mickey Cummins, Sovereign’s Strategic Stock Manager, on their use of SDS Stock Profiler.
Value for Money is a priority for us. We have to remain accountable to the government/regulator and ensure efficient delivery of services to residents. Therefore knowing the value of our assets is key.
Our Strategic Asset Management team defines value as a combination of financial, social and political factors - each has different weighting according to the asset, but the base information is the financial model. This needs to be flexible and able to align the inputs with our business plan, with a consistent approach throughout the asset’s life.
Sovereign had built a model based on a standard Excel spreadsheet. The issue with this was size; to manipulate the data took a lot of time (and patience!); flexibility was lost and potential for errors increased.
Sovereign already used SDS Proval, Landval and Sequel software; many of the criteria required were already provided in these systems. It therefore made sense to approach them about an asset management model.
The starting point is that the system allows our Strategic Asset Management team to fulfil its principle purpose: understanding the value that each asset contributes to the business. It must allow positive investment decisions to be made, enabling us to understand the financial impact of these decisions and so assess the overall “value”.
Moving from a cumbersome, time-consuming Excel spreadsheet to Stock Profiler has allowed significant time savings and gives quicker access to outcomes. We can do more modelling of asset scenarios and have a much greater insight into the different options available.
We can now model, understand and action our Strategic Asset Management Plan in a much shorter period of time than would otherwise have been possible.
“We were delighted to work with Sovereign on this project and we are now excited to offer this tool to other Housing Associations and Local Authorities. Stock Profiler will make it so much easier for them to manage their stock investment.”
