ProVal LS Training Guidance

Training in SDS ProVal LS can be tailored to suit the organisation. Training for new supplies and upgrades for ProVal XL users is provided on-site. Training is paid at the time the supply is made.

End User courses will need to be repeated where there are more than 6 delegates. Half day courses are 4 hours in duration.

There are five courses offered in 2 packages

  • Silver (recommended) This consists of the Administrator and two End User courses plus the Appraisal Appreciation seminar.
  • Gold The Silver package plus the Introduction to Report Writing course

A projector, screen and flipchart will be required. The trainer will bring their own laptop. Customers should ensure that delegates can access the application from the training room beforehand.

Administrator Training & Implementation

This is an informal one day course covering:

Test the installation, perform basic tests and review the IT arrangements for the end-user training.


Administrator Training & Setting System default
  • Overview and familiarisation of ProVal LS
  • Explanation of global settings, scheme and unit defaults
  • Help with adding users
  • Help with creating global settings and defaults
  • Help with creating the project folder tree
  • Help with setting user security & permissions

The Administrator(s) should be reasonably proficient in appraising schemes and sufficiently senior to make decisions on default values and other system settings. For this training one machine is needed with access to the application. The work completed in this training will set the scene for the way in which the end user training is delivered. Note that this course does not deliver end user training.

End-User Beginners Course

This is a hands-on half day course. Users will learn how to complete a basic appraisal from start to finish. The Administrator should attend as well. Some areas of detail are omitted in this course and covered in the Refresher/Advanced course.

End-User Refresher/Advanced Course

This is a half day course. This course is provided after some experience has been gained, c. 2 months after the Beginners course.

This is a hands-on training session and provides training on additional detail and offers the opportunity to refresh aspects from the previous training. It also addresses common issues and difficulties, and provides help with interpreting results.

Appraisal Appreciation Seminar

This is a half day course for users who are unfamiliar with assessing the financial viability of developments, this course covers:

  • What makes a scheme viable
  • Development strategy
  • The significance of the inputs
  • Understanding loan repayment methods, NPV, IRR and other measures
  • Interpreting the results
  • Applying private sector techniques to social housing

No IT equipment is needed for this. It is delivered by a Power Point presentation.

Report Writing Courses

ProVal LS is supplied with a separate report designer application. This application makes it possible for end users to write their own bespoke reports.

  • Report Designer - Introduction

The course is aimed at people who have never written a report before and covers the basics of databases, principles of report design, and understanding how to get specific report requirements from those requesting reports. SDS can also tailor more advanced report writing courses to suit your requirements.
